Spending a lot of money to renovate and furnish your home can be surprisingly easy!

A while ago, we talked about the key aspects to consider and the questions to ask yourself when it’s time to buy furniture for your home. Today, I’d like to explore with you where it’s worth investing and where you can make smarter choices to save money.

1 – RENOVATION: CONTRACTOR VS FINISHES AND MATERIALS

Let’s start with renovation: is it better to invest in the renovation contractor and save on finishes and materials, or the other way around?

You might think that investing in high-quality finishes and materials is the best choice, but in reality, it is often better to invest in the right renovation contractor.

Of course, you need to find the right company, and I actually wrote an article on this topic (you can find it here and in video here).

Why?

Let me explain with an example: imagine that you love marble, a material that is certainly expensive. However, you chose a cheaper renovation contractor, and they do not know how to make the most of this material. What kind of result do you think you will get?

On the other hand, if you decide to save on materials—for example, choosing marble-effect ceramic tiles or porcelain stoneware—and invest in an excellent renovation contractor, they could create a unique installation pattern that makes the floor (or wall) look almost like real marble.

Do not be afraid to explore different installation options with your renovation contractor. You might be surprised by the incredible results you can achieve!

2 – LIVING ROOM: SOFA VS SOFA ACCESSORIES

You can probably guess the answer: it is better to invest in a good sofa rather than in accessories that enhance its look.

We already talked about this: your sofa needs to be comfortable. You should be able to sit down, stretch out, and completely relax.

The sofa is probably the largest and most expensive piece of furniture in the living room, but it is also the one you use the most—whether you are watching TV, reading a book, or chatting with friends.

If it is not truly comfortable, everything will feel more tiring.

Moreover, a sofa is an investment that, when chosen wisely, can last for many years.

When choosing your sofa, besides considering the strength of the frame and the comfort of the cushions, you should, of course, also consider the shape, style, and color that best enhance your room and, as always, reflect who you are… your sofa should represent you too!

As for accessories, such as throws, pillows, and blankets, you may want to change colors, textures, or styles after a while. And if you have invested a lot in them, you might think twice before replacing them.

Besides, you can find many beautiful and original options at affordable prices!

3 – DINING ROOM: TABLE VS CHAIRS

I bet you think it’s better to invest in a good table rather than in chairs!

Well, think again: it is actually better to invest in high-quality chairs and, if necessary, find a compromise when choosing the table.

The reason is simple, and we just talked about it with the sofa: your seat needs to be comfortable!

If you are sitting in an uncomfortable chair, you won’t be able to enjoy your meal properly.

Not exactly ideal, right?

Investing in comfortable, easy-to-maintain seating is truly the best choice!

Think about it: the table is mainly a surface where you place things, and today you can find every type of material, shape, and style. So, finding a beautiful table without spending a fortune is not that difficult.

Moreover, unique chairs can make even the simplest table stand out!

4 – KITCHEN: APPLIANCES VS CABINETRY VS HANDLES AND FAUCETS

The kitchen is one of the most expensive rooms to furnish, and in general, trying to save money on your kitchen is rarely a good idea.

As we have discussed before, the first thing to consider is the appliances, which should be chosen based on how you actually use your kitchen.

You might be someone who loves cooking and uses the oven a lot, so you will want to invest more in a high-quality oven and perhaps less in another appliance, such as a dishwasher.

Remember: your appliances don’t all have to be from the same brand. Choose them based on the features that are most useful for you!

When it comes to cabinetry, handles, and faucets, you need to find the right balance:

– Cabinetry needs to be durable and well-built. Otherwise, you may soon find yourself dealing with misaligned doors, swollen panels, and, ultimately, a kitchen that is no longer functional.

You can save money by opting for simpler doors and drawers, as beautiful handles can completely transform the look of your kitchen.

– Handles are the elements you touch the most, and this is something you should definitely consider. They need to be practical and comfortable to use.

– As for faucets, they need to be functional and suited to the sink you have chosen.

For example, if you have a large single-bowl sink, it is a good idea to choose a pull-out faucet with a spray function so you can clean every corner of the sink with ease.

So, in the kitchen, it is truly essential first to understand how you live and use this space. This will help you decide where to invest a little more and where you can spend a little less—but don’t try to save money at all costs!

5 – BEDROOM: MATTRESS VS BED FRAME

Here, the same principle we discussed with the sofa applies: it is definitely better to invest in a good mattress, because when you go to sleep, you need to be truly comfortable! (Remember, you spend about one-third of your life on your mattress!)

Look for a mattress that properly supports you based on your sleeping position and truly adapts to your needs.

A good, restorative sleep is essential to help you face your day at your best.

Not all mattresses are the same, and choosing the right one can truly make a difference!

Of course, in addition to the mattress, you also need to consider a good bed base to let the mattress maintain its supportive qualities.

When it comes to the bed frame itself, however, this is where you can save money. You could even choose a simple headboard attached directly to the wall!

There are countless solutions available in every style, material, and color, so finding the one that best suits you will definitely not be difficult.

6 – LIGHT FIXTURES VS LIGHT BULBS

This comparison might seem a little unusual, because light bulbs are obviously not as expensive as light fixtures. However, I would still say it is better to invest in high-quality light bulbs!

While you can find light fixtures in every style, material, and color, the light bulb is what truly makes the difference in creating good lighting and achieving visual comfort.

Choose a light bulb with the right brightness, color temperature, and, most importantly, excellent color rendering.

7 – CURTAINS VS CURTAIN RODS

Curtains dress up a home and add warmth and coziness to a space.

When it comes to curtains and curtain rods, including all the related accessories, it is better to invest in high-quality curtains!

Simply because curtains are something you touch, while curtain rods are placed up high and are mostly something you see.

Moreover, a high-quality curtain will also be easier to maintain, wash, and iron.

When it comes to curtain rods, you can now find countless options in different colors, materials, and styles, so it is easy to choose the one that best suits your home.

8 – HANDMADE ELEMENTS

When spending to renovate and furnish your home, it is always worth investing in something handmade something created by an artisan—of course, we are talking about high-quality, durable, and well-made pieces.

Handmade items have something special: they are unique. No matter how many pieces an artisan creates, they will never produce them in huge quantities. And because they are handmade, it is very unlikely to find two pieces identical.

This is what makes these elements different and original!

Of course, I am not only talking about furniture, but also about decorative items such as paintings, sculptures, baskets, and other objects.

If you love to travel, always keep an eye out for local handmade items. They can add that extra special touch to your home!

Investing in this type of piece does not necessarily mean spending a lot of money. Think, for example, about second-hand markets or vintage finds…
