When it’s time for decorating your home, it’s easy to seek inspiration from magazines and the internet.

Often, we come across quite magnificent settings, but be careful about copying them because some solutions are indeed impractical!!! The home should be beautiful but, above all, functional!

Let’s look at some elements that may have the wow factor but can ultimately prove to be less convenient!

– WHITE SOFAS

White sofas are actually gorgeous to look at; for sure white is a timeless color that complements any style and palette.

Moreover, it certainly helps make the room feel more airy and bright.

The temptation, therefore, can be strong, but it’s genuinely not practical!

White gets dirty immediately, and you have to wash the covers very often, inevitably wearing them out!

Alternatively, you have to put unaesthetic sofa covers on them!

And on this matter, unfortunately, I speak from experience because my first sofas, I admit, were white!!

If you absolutely love white sofas, the advice is to buy ones with highly performant covers, like those water-repellent and stain-resistant.

Alternatively, an excellent compromise could be sofas in cream, gray, or ultra-light colors!

– ARMLESS SOFAS

Armless sofas are very popular because they are linear and elegant, and without the bulk of armrests, they also appear more “lightweight”!

However, having arm support is much more comfortable and less rigid when sitting on the sofa!

If you don’t have an ottoman or a chaise lounge, you might still want to stretch your legs; if you have an armrest supporting your back, you can do it right on the sofa!

Even during a nap, having an armrest to rest the pillow on is undoubtedly more comfortable and “cocooning”!

In fact, the armrest somehow embraces you!

When buying a sofa, considering the investment, it’s essential to be clear about how you will use it because it’s actually a shame when sitting on it not to feel comfortable!

– GLASS SURFACES

Glass greatly helps in brightening up a room; it’s relatively easy and quick to clean.

However, the downside is that it just takes a touch to get dirty, and dust is more noticeable on glass surfaces than on others!

So, especially if you’re not a fan of cleaning, carefully consider whether and what to get in glass.

If you love glass, you might consider getting frosted glass, which, being not transparent, will better camouflage dust and any traces!

The same goes for glossy black surfaces: they constantly need cleaning!

– OPEN SHELVES AND NIGHTSTANDS

The concept of open shelves and nightstands has been popular for many years because it gives more breathing space to the rooms than closed furniture.

All the images featured in magazines or on Pinterest and Instagram are undoubtedly fabulous!

However, the reality is that most of the time, these setups are composed precisely for photographs.

In real life, things are not as they appear in the pictures!

Moreover, cleaning open bookshelves, shelves, and nightstands and removing everything each time is indeed impractical!

Does this mean having only closed furniture?

Obviously not, but there should be a few carefully chosen and decorated elements.

They should be well thought out and intentional, designed to showcase rather than “store.”

Let me explain further: there are books and objects worth displaying, creating unique compositions, and others that are not!

There’s also a practical aspect alongside the aesthetic one: everything that’s open and in plain view needs regular cleaning.

So, if you prefer to spend your time differently than constantly cleaning, think carefully about how much you want to keep open and on display!

– VESSEL SINK

For a few years, the bathroom trend has included the vessel sink placed on a cabinet or shelf.

This type of sink can come in any size or shape, paired with a long or wall-mounted faucet.

Let’s admit it: there are some indeed lovely ones to look at, but they are not very practical!

In reality, the area where the sink rests on the cabinet or shelf will always be wet and dirty, requiring constant cleaning.

In the case of a faucet also resting on the cabinet, there might be difficulty in cleaning that area effectively!

If it’s a guest bathroom you don’t use very often, this inconvenience might not be so noticeable, but it will be evident in the case of the main bathroom!

It’s better to have a sponge nearby and clean after each use!

– OPEN SHOWERS

Open showers are also an increasingly popular trend, with only one side glass wall covering half of the shower, leaving the rest open!

They are undoubtedly absolutely captivating, super minimal, visually perfect, especially in contemporary style, but decidedly impractical!

One reason is that no matter how careful you are, it’s inevitable to splash water everywhere!

It might work well if you have a huge shower with a glass wall that is actually long; otherwise, it can be very inconvenient!

However, another aspect may not be immediately apparent: since the shower is not enclosed, there won’t be a greenhouse effect, and therefore, there is a risk, especially in winter, of feeling cold!

– SHAG RUGS

I’ve often talked about the importance of rugs in interior design: they bring textures and colors and can create defined areas by grouping elements together!

However, you must be careful about the type of rug you choose!

It’s easy to be drawn to shag rugs because they are visually appealing, but most importantly, they are super soft!

The problem is that they require continuous maintenance because they trap dirt much more and definitely become tangled and matted.

They should certainly be avoided in homes with pets, as their claws will easily damage the rug, and their fur will more readily get caught in the long fibers!

But in general, even high-quality shag rugs will wear out much more quickly than short-pile ones.

They might be suitable in low-traffic areas, but even then, given the vast range of other options, the advice is to avoid them!

Is it possible to change the look of a room for free?

After some time of living in a house, certain areas may lose their appeal in our eyes.

Sometimes, we may feel like throwing everything away and starting over from scratch…

Has that happened to you as well; am I right?

If so, as I imagine, today’s article is for you because I’ll give you four tips to change the look of a room for free!

Yes, you heard it right, for free!

But is it truly possible?

Let’s find out!

– CLEAN AND ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY THINGS

Who among us doesn’t have objects bought or gifted over the years that are now useless or no longer serve a purpose?

Or piles of newspapers and magazines that we’re unlikely to ever look at again, just accumulating somewhere?

It’s time to clean up, remove, and make space!

Get rid of anything that doesn’t hold any value for you, anything you don’t need!

It may seem unbelievable, but this simple act alone will already transform the space, and it’s completely FREE!

– CHANGE THE ARRANGEMENT OF FURNITURE

Try to imagine different ways of positioning the same furniture in the room.

Start visualizing new layouts and then actually try moving some pieces of furniture.

What’s the worst that could happen?

Even if things go wrong, you can always put everything back the way it was before and get a little workout in the process!

At least you’ll have a clear understanding that the original arrangement is the one you really prefer!

The reality is that many times there are other options for arranging the same elements, which may even become more functional!

A different and more functional layout will make you love the room even more, making you feel even more comfortable.

Leave room for imagination, envision, and try it out, if you want to first on paper, or you can go ahead and physically move the furniture.

That, too, is a cost-free intervention; the investment is only your time and physical strength!

– REARRANGE YOUR OBJECTS

Take all the objects you have in that room and “take them away.”

If you love specific compositions, maybe take photos of them first, just in case, to be able to recreate them if needed.

But, as with furniture, even the composition that seems most beautiful to you could (as you can see, I’m using the conditional) become even more stunning!

Even a different arrangement of various objects like books, vases, photographs, and so on will undoubtedly give a different look to the space!

And once again, the investment is your time, not money!

– MOVE, SWAP DECORATIONS BETWEEN ROOMS

It may seem trivial, but try bringing, for example, vases from your bedroom to the living room, or vice versa, swap paintings, and so on!

After all, it’s not like things, once placed, have to stay in that place forever!

The room will transform!

Of course, this is feasible if the house has a common thread in terms of colors and style!

As I’ve often mentioned, it’s essential to have a color palette and use it throughout the house.

It doesn’t have to be the same everywhere.

One room can have a predominant color from the palette, while another room can have a different color.

However, the palette should be consistent.

The same goes for styles.

Once you’ve chosen a style or a mix of styles, you should maintain it throughout the house.

That will allow you to freely move furniture and objects without them EVER being out of place.

I hope you find these simple tips helpful in changing the look of a room, if you put them into practice let me see the before and after in the comments!

Furnishing your home is exciting and thrilling, but it’s easy to run into common mistakes that will then make the result not quite what you imagined!

Today I would like to talk about what to do when you decide to furnish your home, giving you four helpful tips to succeed in having the home of your dreams.

Now you know, I’ve said it several times: it is necessary to have a detailed project, even when you have to “only” furnish; if not, the risk is to buy impulsively things that you like but then do not fit with the rest!

So let’s see 4 steps to take to baste a project and avoid mistakes!

1 – DEFINE YOUR STYLE AND YOUR NEEDS:

It seems like a trifle, but we don’t always think deeply about our needs and what we really want and need.

Yet an environment becomes truly special when it reflects the particular personality of the person who inhabits it!

Everyone is unique, and we experience home differently based on who we are and our habits.

So here is where it becomes relevant to know what we like, but more importantly, what is really functional for our daily lives.

So the first thing to do is to evaluate the functional aspects of the spaces you have:

– how do you use that particular space?

– What do you need to make sure that you are comfortable performing various tasks?

Once you have identified these two things in detail, it is a good idea to make a list of what and how much furniture you need and decide where to place it so that it will be functional.

NOW YOU CAN MOVE ON

Next you can move on to aesthetics, thinking about what style or mix of styles you would like in your home to feel good.

To do this, you can take inspiration from the Internet (we know Pinterest is an inexhaustible source) and/or magazines

Be careful not to “copy” the settings you see that attract you; this could be detrimental (I explained this in this video).

Ask yourself what you are drawn to and like about those settings:

– color palette

– textures

– materials

– lighting

– style…

When you understand and are clear about your preferences, you can really start to get more into the details.

An important thing to do is to organize the ideas and, especially, to see that all the inspirations we have chosen can match each other.

One effective way is to create a mood board where you put everything that attracts you: furniture, objects, textiles, colors, everything.

There are many ways to do that: for example, you can do it with Canvas or even simply using PowerPoint.

Mood boards are used to visualize all the ideas effectively: everything is packed together in one sheet.

What you need to check is whether the final result is pleasing and harmonious and whether everything fits together perfectly.

If not, you can always make adjustments and avoid buying things that won’t fit later!

2 – CHOOSE THE COLOR PALETTE

In recent years the trend in home colors is to use hues that bring back nature and warm neutrals.

But this doesn’t necessarily fit you! You have to choose the one that you feel most can represent your personality and makes you feel good.

(credit Fab mood)

The palette you choose will also serve as a guide when choosing furniture, as well as textiles, lamps, and various decorations!

To do this, start with the details of the room, such as the floor, the finishes, such as windows and doors, and the type of light, natural and artificial present.

I recommend choosing neutral colors as a general base and then the color(s) (without overdoing it) you will want to use to define the color palette.

Remember that the same color can then be used with different saturations creating movement even with one color.

(credit annabellkutucu.com)

Of course, the palette may change a bit over time, but it is paramount to have it to understand whether a particular item you would like to buy is in harmony with the whole!

Having clear ideas about colors and materials is absolutely essential to having a harmonious and cohesive home.

3 – LIGHTING PROJECT

Light plays a crucial role in decorating your home because, depending on how it is designed, it can change the face of the room.

You may have studied and chosen the best aesthetic and decided on the best color palette, but if you get the light wrong, the result will be compromised.

Why is light so important?

Because it can change the way we perceive spaces and especially how we can feel inside them.

Good light will enhance the colors chosen and the furnishings present, as well, because it defines the volumes and creates movement and depth through light-shadow contrasts.

That makes spaces definitely more appealing and aesthetically pleasing!

In a video, I explained in detail how to best light each room by describing the various types of lighting and how to choose the right color temperature for the bulbs (you can find it here)

– DON’T MISS THE DETAILS

Details make a difference and should be studied.

By details, I mean, for example, the door and cabinet handles the faucets, and architectural details that may already be present or that you may want to add.

These details, well thought out, will enhance your rooms!

Even in fashion, clothes are enhanced with a few details, such as a belt, a brooch, or particular jewelry, when you wear them.

Details will help add personality and style to your home, making an ordinary space into something fabulous!

Of course, these details must match your chosen style and color palette to maintain balance and harmony.

Carefully following these 4 steps will allow you to make conscious and focused choices for a home that represents you in depth and where you will always feel comfortable!

One last tip: when shopping for your home, always carry the mood board you created with you, so you will avoid buying things that don’t fit, somehow ruining all the work done!!!
