Bringing well-being into the home

Bringing a sense of well-being into the home is essential to creating happy spaces where we can retreat, recharge, and feel at ease.

Many factors influence human behavior, and the environments where we live and work can certainly affect the way we behave.

When it comes to our work environment, unless we are the business owners, there is often little we can do to change it. But when it comes to our homes, there is a lot we can—and should—do!

We need to create spaces that reflect who we are, spaces we genuinely enjoy spending time in because they make us feel happy.

So, let’s take a look at 5 key aspects of bringing well-being into our homes…

1 – FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS

When you decide to design your home, or even just a single room, there are two things you need to keep in mind first:

– What activities will you do in that space?

– What feelings and emotions do you want to experience while you’re there?

It may seem obvious, but these two points will guide your choices regarding the furniture, materials, room arrangement, and colors you use.

Let’s take the living room, for example.

It is undoubtedly a place where we want to feel comfortable and relaxed, but it is also a space where we can spend time with friends without too much formality.

2 – SPACE

Nowadays, society is moving faster and faster, and we are more connected than ever. This is why, especially if you don’t live alone, it is important to create spaces where you can feel “isolated” from everything and everyone.

This applies both when you need a moment for yourself and when you want to focus on an activity, such as working or studying, without interruptions or too many distractions.

For this reason, multifunctional spaces and acoustic separation between different areas of the home will become increasingly important.

Moreover, returning to the first point, it will be essential to furnish each room functionally so that you can move through your home effortlessly and manage your daily activities more easily.

3 – MATERIALS AND FURNITURE

Your home should be your sanctuary, so it is essential to care for it and preserve it over time.

For this reason, it is important to choose high-quality furniture and materials that are built to last.

Beyond the durability of materials, it is also essential to understand where they come from and whether they could potentially be harmful.

Paints and fabrics, in particular, may contain harmful substances that can be released into the air.

This aspect is extremely important for your health and definitely should not be overlooked! (I talk about this and much more in an interview with Carla Spessato, an eco-creative consultant.)

Choosing long-lasting materials and furniture will also make your choices more sustainable—not only for the planet but for your wallet as well!

If you are someone who loves changing things around and/or following trends, do it with smaller elements such as textiles and decorations.

4 – NATURE

I bet that whenever you have the chance to immerse yourself in nature, you feel happier and more relaxed!

That is why bringing nature into our homes is essential to recreate those same feelings.

Plants and flowers add scents and textures that make our spaces feel more comfortable and reconnect us with the natural world.

But, as you already know, they are also beneficial for our health, as many plants can help purify the air.

I know it is not always easy to take care of plants. I have to admit that I am not very good at it myself. But there are wide varieties that are relatively easy to care for. (Simona Borgia, Urban Gardener, talks about this here.)

5 – COLORS

Could I really talk about well-being at home without talking about colors?

By now, I have probably said it a thousand times: colors have a strong psychological impact and can influence our mood.

So, when creating your color palette, it is important to carefully consider the feelings and emotions that each color evokes, rather than simply choosing a color because you like it.

Create a general color palette for your entire home, and then customize it for each room to create different atmospheres and feelings.

Let me explain: imagine that your color palette includes green and orange.

Since green is a very calming color, you might use it as the dominant color (the famous 60%) in your living room and bedroom, while orange, which is more energetic, could be used in the kitchen or dining area.
